WSI Forecasts a Cold Winter in Northern Mainland, parts of UK, Scandinavia
Coldest Weather in UK Expected after New Year
Andover, MA, November 24, 2009 —
WSI expects the upcoming period (December-February) to average cooler
than normal in Scandinavia, parts of the UK, and the northern mainland.
“The combination of the current El Nino event, abundant Eurasian
snow cover, and a favourable pattern of ocean temperatures in the Atlantic
Ocean suggest that this winter will be a cold one across much of northern
and central Europe, especially after the New Year” said WSI seasonal
forecaster Dr. Todd Crawford. “For the UK, we expect total winter
energy usage to be somewhere between that of the last two winters.”
In December, WSI predicts regional temperature anomalies as follows:
Scandinavia – Colder than normal
UK – Slightly milder than normal
Northern Mainland – Slightly milder than normal
Southern Mainland – Milder than normal
In January, WSI sees the monthly breakdown as:
Scandinavia – Colder than normal
UK – Slightly milder than normal
Northern Mainland – Slightly milder than normal
Southern Mainland – Milder than normal
In February, WSI forecasts:
Scandinavia – Much Colder than normal
UK – Much Colder than normal
Northern Mainland – Colder than normal
